Scientific basis that means of enhancement may exist?

The means of enhancing a person's cognitive or emotional experience is well understood. This has stemmed from both conventional western studies in the domain of positive psychology as well as in studies of practices of eastern origin.

Just keeping track may be all you need

Modern machine learning methods in computer vision may easily facilitate researchers keeping track of their emotional and cognitive states, further enhancing their means to enhance these over time.

Social connection and flourishing

What if a computer could measure someone's level of flourishing and/or connection with another person? If these were related, one could have a context and means of feedback with which to practice.

Happiness and performance

If happiness was directly causal in regard to work performance, such as in the curing of disease, then measurement of happiness using computer vision could be useful for facilitating the curing of disease; perhaps by simply knowing one's level of happiness over time one would be motivated to steadily improve it; perhaps relating this to productivity would be further motivating.

Flow experiences

Does a state of flow for a particular person (1) always look about the same, and (2) look quite different from other states? If so, unsupervised / unlabeled / implicit representational methods of machine learning could be used to annotate and motivate increases in the frequency of flow experiences.

Eastern practices have been well-studied in the west

Thousands of years of practice in the east has since been well studied in the west in scientifically rigorous circumstances; various practices are well established to enhance the psychological experience of those that practice these techniques. For example, in some settings, it has been shown what we practice grows stronger.

Mindfulness meditation

Meditation practitioners are taught to maintain a particular baseline facial expression when meditating; perhaps facial expression feedback could help improve the quality of meditation experiences.

Loving-kindness meditation

Perhaps computer vision could detect when someone was holding a loving facial expression or speaking in a loving way; perhaps this could facilitate loving-kindness meditation or an interpersonal alternative to it.

Breath practices

Heart and other cardiovascular diseases are leading cause of death in the US; would computer vision or microphone feedback were to enhance the efficacy of breath meditation in this regard, many lives could be saved.

Understand enhanced states

Machine learning can be used to detect the subtle emotional states and state patterns of people over time, providing them a reference point to use to enhance their psychological experience to extended sessions of happiness and flow (while retaining full control over their own data).

Detect anomalies

Strong emotions can be hyper-focus inducing. Anomaly detection could be used to warn users of the possibility of burnout by noticing when states are well outside of normal distributions. Keeping them well could be as easy as a timely recommendation about taking a walk or break.

Understand multi-party states

Machine learning could be used to further understand the meaning of multi-party emotion states and dynamics - whether that's to support the enhancement of individuals' romantic/personal relationships or to enhance cohesion, communication, and belonging at work.

Understand recommendation effect

Collecting time-series emotion state and efficacy data while providing behavioral recommendations presents an opportunity to carefully measure the usefulness and timeliness of these recommendations.
