In the modern era, optimism is called for that many important problems will be solvable especially those in imaging, sensing, and data- or computation-enabled modelling.
This is because the modern era provides us rather advanced tools. That includes the massive wealth of data and other digital information, extant or obtainable, as well as very advanced methods of analysis - whether that's pure or applied mathematics (including machine learning).
If your problem relates to one of these or another watershed transitions in technology and/or society, it's worth expecting your research problem will be newly solvable.
Further, new opportunities can be identified in part in regard to, especially a change in, one or more of these areas.
New datasets, sensing technology, and data scale
A key resource of the modern era is data; data availability and measurement resources are a key advancement empowering the current era. When a new type of data can be obtained, such as co-acquired ultrasound and hyper-spectral imaging of newly increased resolution, new opportunities present.
Learning from data
With the transition in the availability of data also has come a revolution in methods by which capabilities can be learned to re-capitulate patterns provided as learning problems (such as input/output mappings).
Predicting the future; delving into phenomena
Estimating outcomes using models is increasingly useful and feasibly by simply generating a large number of "roll outs" from a model, for example a weather model, to estimate the statistical likelihood of an event; more generally, models can be learned then likelihoods estimated by sampling these.
Theory (Pure Mathematics, Theoretical Physics, Biophysics, etc.)
All of these areas of progress has produced ongoing revolutionary progress in the pure theory sciences that itself compounds and is further facilitating and facilitated by these trends.
